Happy Halloween! Be spooky, but stay safe!

Our team here at SERVPRO of Southern Delaware County & West Chester wishes you a very a happy Halloween! We know you are all excited to put up your decorations and go out trick-or-treating, but we want to give you a few important Halloween safety tips – as your safety is always our top priority!

Halloween Lights and Electronic Decorations:

• Use outdoor lights and décor outside only, and indoor lights and décor indoors only.
• Whether lights, electronic decorations, or extension cords are brand new or used, always inspect them all for wear and tear before using!
• Do not overload extension cords.

Costumes for Children:

• Costumes should be marked as “flame resistant” on the packaging.
• Make sure the eye holes of the mask are big enough that your child can see in all directions – without proper visibility, your child is at risk of traffic hazards and tripping.
• Make sure children’s costumes have snaps and velcro as closures so that costumes can be removed quickly in case of emergency.
• Remember to check for proper ventilation in all masks!

Pumpkin Carving:

• Make sure to keep your hands and tool handles dry by frequently using a towel to dry them to avoid slips!
• Use a duller blade rather than a sharp one. You have to use a lot of pressure to cut through a pumpkin, whether the knife is dull or sharp, but this way you have less of a chance of also piercing your hand!
• Use a specially designed pumpkin carving kit, which includes saws meant to only slice through tough pumpkin skin.
• You can always use paint instead, so small children can feel more involved, since they should not be allowed to use knives.
