Fire Safety in the Workplace
11/1/2021 (Permalink)
A fire in a business can cause severe damage to structures, equipment, and inventory – not to mention a delay in production or sales, and danger to employees and customers. This is why it is so important to practice fire safety in your commercial property! Here are some tips:
- Make sure you have fire protection equipment, such as an automatic sprinkler system, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers on every floor. Employees should be familiar with their locations.
- Have a fire plan! Make sure your employees know what to do if there is a fire. Make an evacuation plan that does not include elevators. Conduct fire drills at least once a year to keep employees prepared.
- Always leave space around appliances that heat up – such as coffee machines and computers. They need the space to ventilate and cool down. If possible, unplug appliances at the end of the day to avoid an afterhours risk.
- Regularly check power cords for fraying, broken connectors, or cracked insulation. Replace them if there is any damage.
- Always keep a first aid kit available to employees in a familiar location.
You can also always check with a fire marshal to offer you some guidance, as well!
